My wife and I were so delighted with our new dog, Mariah. She was well
trained at her kennel. She seldom barked; she was not destructive; she was house
broken. Then we discovered we had a Jekyll and Hyde. When we had visitors, she
was suddenly an unfriendly dog, and when we went our for a walk with her, she
was so preoccupied and fearful of any strange dog or person, that she would
stand like a statue. In nursery school, they would have said: “Does not play
well with others.”
We understood that it would be difficult for a six year old dog to leave her
familiar environment, and we did our best to allay her fears. We were patient;
we said, “There, there.” A lot. But her anti-social behavior continued without
abatement. We felt that Mariah was going to live a very constricted life. ..and
so would we. So we asked our most knowledgeable friend to recommend a dog
trainer who would be humane.
When David arrived, Mariah pulled no punches. She barked and growled. It was
Daniel in the lion’s den. But in one lesson, he had her on the leash, accepting
his leadership. David taught us about the canine mind, a very different
mentality, and gave us insights about how we supported the behavior we wanted to
change. Then he brought his dog, Louie into the lion’s den, and, in short order,
Mariah was behaving like a calmer, more sociable dog.
Would it stick? Would it work without David? The very next day, we went out for
a walk and did what David had suggested. Mariah walked without freezing, without
looking over her shoulder. Our very tall son and little grandson came to spend
the weekend, and Mariah was fine. Then on one neighborhood walk, our worst fear
materialized: a dog rushing at us, off leash. Mariah was not happy, but she
didn’t bolt. She stayed close to us, didn’t bark or growl, and we did not find
ourselves trying to referee a dog fight. I recommend David and his methods to
anyone who loves their dog and wants the best.
