She is afraid of everything and nothing. Those were the words we used to
describe Lucy our 3-year-old Chinese Sharpei when we first met David Reinecker.
Six weeks earlier Lucy and Ethel our 8-year-old female Chinese Sharpei had
gotten into a fight. Although the fight lasted less than 5 minutes Ethel
required over 150 stitches and 5 shunts in her neck while healing. We weren’t
sure she was going to make it and if she did, my husband told me I needed to
prepare myself for the idea that Lucy may need to live somewhere else for a
while. We kept the girls apart while Ethel was healing.
I took Lucy into our vet, Dr. Moller at California Animal Hospital, for a follow
up visit. He didn’t think we could put them back together after being apart for
so long without professional help. I had looked at various web sites most were
slick to look at but not to helpful then, I started to read the testimonials on
Dog Remedy’s website. I showed a page from the Dog Remedy website to Dr. Moller.
He personally knew David and told me than he was kind and gentle and would be
very humane with the girls.
We wasted no time making our appointment. David came to our home and on that
first visit he asked a lot of questions but he really listened too. I was
starting to feel better then, he asked if we could put the dogs together.
To our amazement and relief at the end of the hour the girls were sitting next
to each other. The very next day they were sleeping side by side. We all had our
first really good night of sleep in weeks.
Before we met David I don’t think we had even mention to him about our 3rd
Chinese Sharpei Ricky – a 9-month-old un-neutered male since we didn’t think he
was involved in the fighting. But we found out he also was compounding the
problem.
We had been so busy with the girls that we were neglecting puppy training. David
taught us and Ricky some puppy training 101. We were mastering our aggression
problems but what about Lucy’s fearfulness? We had Ricky neutered and David
started him on a workout program. As David spent time with Ricky, Lucy wanted to
know what David and Ricky were doing outside on these visits without her. Once
Ricky learned how to walk on a leash and was controllable David invited Lucy to
come with them. Her behavior started to change as well. She became calmer and
she started to look for David when he came to the house. After a couple of
visits Lucy who was afraid of everyone was starting to run to the door to greet
David. Noises she had long feared she no longer noticed. We had friends coming
to the house who for the first time could actually pet Lucy and she wouldn’t run
upstairs to hide. Neighbors can’t believe she is the same dog.
